English Teacher - Song About Love
Following their incredible debut EP ‘Polyawkward’ last year, Leeds alternative heavyweights English Teacher have released their outstanding new standalone single ‘Song About Love’. The self-proclaimed ‘pop song’ still blends the groups’ trademark elements of lo-fi and punk with marvellous results.
From start to finish it’s brimming with the charm that made their EP such a delight. Lyrically, it’s both tongue in cheek (described by band leader Lily Fontaine as being about “doing chores instead of doing someone else”) and full of guttural and world-weary emotion. Think Wet Leg meets Wolf Alice.
Production comes in the form of Dan Carey who took the helm of last year's incredible Foals album ‘Life Is Yours’ and is featured prominently on Slowthai’s upcoming third album ‘UGLY’. He has a penchant for mixing techno, punk and pop in a way that perfectly suits the sound English Teacher have embodied on this track.
Fontaine echoed this statement with her praise for the producer “The final record is one of the first takes we did in the studio, thanks to the atmosphere Dan and Speedy create to work in. It was a relief to finally get into the room and discuss our music and music in general; what came out the other end certainly couldn’t have happened in another space, with another producer or on another day”.
‘Song About Love’ marks an exhilarating upcoming twelve months for English Teacher. Stay tuned.
